A ILHA DA BOA VIDA The Island of Good Life

First there were the fishermen. Before the East India Company built the great fortress in the beginning of time Bombay was only an island. In this primitive world, before clock towers, the fishermen called Kolis, sailed in Arabian boats and caught fish and crabs making all the Mumbaikars love fish. There were coconuts and rice and, above all, the benign and president influence of the goddess Mumbadevi whose name became the name of the city, then the Portuguese named it Bom Bahia because of its maritime port and also, among other names, Boa Vida Good Life). But it was by the English that it was expressly built to keep the trade connections between India and England not foreseeing the big city it would become. Nowadays Bombay is Mumbai, a city with a population over the 17 million people and with a daily migration of about 500 families coming from several parts of India looking for work. Bearing in mind the importance of this city as an economy and work center of the whole country, its sudden population growth and physical metamorphosis as a city, the aim of this project is to portray "a day" showing, above all, a pictoric impression of how are presently lived the streets of this big city. This project is confined to the time space of a complete day: the night, the dawn, the day, the afternoon, the evening and again the night. Images will be captured in streets from the whole city which identify different neighborhoods as well as different ethnicities and social ranks. From a technical point of view the presented project will be composed by photography sequences along with environment music. The final result will be an image composition, not in real time but in time lapse, with steady-cam or in motion, of the Mumbai streets and all its inhabitants' daily life.
